Open AI is currently testing a prototype of an AI-powered search engine, which will eventually be integrated into Chat GPT.
The project is called Search GPT and differs from traditional search engines. Instead of presenting a list of links when the user searches for something, Search GPT organizes and summarizes the results, with the option to ask follow-up questions. It should also be possible to click on to the original sources for those who are not satisfied with the information that the AI has summarized.
A concern that is sometimes raised when AI search services come up is that it will become unprofitable to create unique content, when fewer and fewer people need to detour around one’s website to get answers to their searches. Criticism has also been raised against AI models being trained on content, although the site owners have not given their consent to it.
However, Open AI claims that it is keen to create “a thriving ecosystem of publishers and creators”, where users are helped to discover publisher sites, while providing more opportunities to deepen searches.
They further argue that Search GPT is only about search and is therefore separate from the training of the company’s AI models. Website owners should be able to decide for themselves how their content is displayed in the search engine and the sites can be displayed in the search results even if their owners choose not to contribute to AI training.
Anyone interested in testing Search GPT at an early stage can sign up the waiting list.
