OpenAI and iPhone designers work on AI device

OpenAI may be on the verge of a major shake-up that could also change the way we interact with Gen AI. From innovative AI hardware to rebranding, there are big plans.

ChatGPT has been on everyone’s lips for years – and has long since become part of everyday work and search life. The company behind the exceptional tool, OpenAI, has since made a name for itself at the forefront of Gen AI development. This was not least due to the billion-dollar funding from the tech heavyweight Microsoft. Today, OpenAI’s AI models and tools are integrated into various digital contexts, from Ecosia search to Snapchat’s AI Bot to the comprehensive Apple Intelligence in the new iPhones.

While OpenAI is making a name for itself with ever-new, innovative features for ChatGPT, new AI models and even its own AI Search Experience and is making increasing sales, the company wants to reposition itself – and possibly become even more powerful. One of the most exciting projects is the development of its own AI device, on which the former long-time Apple design chief Jony Ive is working.

OpenAI raises billions and plans AI hardware

In a Article in the New York Times Jony Ive confirmed that he is working with OpenAI on a device that brings the company’s AI functions directly to users – similar to Apple Intelligence. Ive has reportedly been working with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman for some time. However, this project, about which hardly any details have been made public, could raise up to a billion US dollars in funding by the end of the year via the company Emerson Collective. Laut The Verge Ten people are currently working on the project, including former Ives employees who helped with the iPhone development. It is still unclear when exactly a launch or at least the presentation of the first details might take place. However, a device developed by OpenAI itself has the potential to shake up the hardware market, which is currently being overwhelmed by AI updates.

Meanwhile, OpenAI wants to set up new internal structures in order to be able to work even more efficiently in the transformation of the digital industry. With a new round of financing, the company is aiming Bloomberg Sea a valuation of 150 billion US dollars and wants to raise around 6.5 billion US dollars. A credit line of five billion US dollars is also on the table thanks to the cooperation with large banks. This financial background, coupled with the increased annualized revenue of $3.4 billion into a potential space that is likely to change the digital scene due to the relevance of OpenAI solutions.

New models, rebranding and more safety

The frequency with which OpenAI has presented large and small developments in recent months is remarkable. Examples include new features for ChatGPT such as the memory function for free users, free image creation with DALL-E 3, the new desktop app and the Advanced Voice Mode, which is even supposed to recognize emotions.

In addition, the company recently caused a sensation with the launch of the large new AI model o1 – developed under the working title Strawberry. Just this spring, another, highly functional and multimodal model, GPT-4o, was introduced.

OpenAI is also working on developing its own search solution; after all, many users already use ChatGPT to search. SearchGPT, currently still a prototype, is intended to be a dedicated option that could also be integrated into ChatGPT. The company is already cooperating with numerous large publishing houses and media outlets such as Condé Nast, Axel Springer, Stack Overflow, Reddit, News Corp, Le Monde, Vox Media BuzzFeed, TIME, the Financial Times, GitHub, The Atlantic, AP and many others.

The diversification was recently expressed with the launch of a new X account for the OpenAI Newsroom. For example, the launch of the new Safety and Security Committee was recently announced via this account, which is intended to provide independent guidelines for safe AI development.

But that’s not all. The new OpenAI Academy is intended to support developers, especially in smaller countries – and, last but not least, to bind AI experts to OpenAI’s tools and models. The company has already done a good job in terms of recognition; but reports say it needs a new logo. According to Fortune It could be a large, black O that could be identified as a ring. According to information from sources close to the company, the first draft was not well received internally. However, a major restructuring, new models and possibly even devices could also be accompanied by a rebranding that will soon show us OpenAI in a new guise, perhaps not before 2025.

Meanwhile, the rapid development of Gen AI will keep users, developers and large tech companies on their toes. Sam Altman recently explained in his text „The Intelligence Age“:

(…) We need to act wisely but with conviction. The dawn of the Intelligence Age is a momentous development with very complex and extremely high-stakes challenges. It will not be an entirely positive story, but the upside is so tremendous that we owe it to ourselves, and the future, to figure out how to navigate the risks in front of us. I believe the future is going to be so bright that no one can do it justice by trying to write about it now; a defining characteristic of the Intelligence Age will be massive prosperity (…).

The industry can look forward to major innovations that will follow the turning point that the Gen AI boom has already marked. In addition to OpenAI, players such as Meta, Microsoft, Google, and institutions such as the EU will play a central role.
