According to Sam Altman, the $200 monthly fee is pointless when subscribers use the service far more than expected.
A few months ago, everyone was loudly scoffing at the ChatGPT Pro subscription, which charges users $200 per month. Therefore, in exchange for the price, it offers access to OpenAI’s o1 AI model, video generation software and all its extra features.
Sam Altman, the president of the company, said in a tweet that he chose the price himself, hoping that they would make some money with it. Later it turned out that he was wrong.
OpenAI has raised a total of $20 billion in investments, half of which was provided by Microsoft, but since it is still not making a profit, the costs can quickly drain the company’s savings. Last year, the company, which was originally started as a non-profit, lost 3.7 billion, and the loss may increase to 5 billion this year. Maintaining the workforce, the offices, and the structures that train AI models will certainly cost that much, and this is the less dangerous situation. There was a point where ChatGPT was costing the company $700,000 a day.
OpenAI will soon transform its internal structures and look for new investors. According to their optimistic estimates, by 2029, it could generate an annual income of 100 billion, which would put it on the same level as Nestlé, the world’s leading food industry company.
