OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT and the great boom in generative artificial intelligence, is getting ready to enter a new market. This time they want to threaten the position of the Chrome browser.
OpenAI has targeted Google and intends to compete with the giant in another market. After a search engine based on ChatGPT technology debuted less than a month ago, we now learn that a browser is also being prepared. Altman himself aims high, but does he have a chance to fight Google’s monopoly?
The browser is a logical step
Microsoft, which has invested heavily in OpenAI and has been competing strongly with Google in many fields for years, has failed. The Google search engine currently accounts for about 90% of the global market, while Bing has about 4% and this result is not expected to improve. By introducing its own search engine, OpenAI wants to get a piece of this cake, but it certainly won’t be easy. Especially since the giant from Mountain View already offers similar capabilities to ChatGPT, which instead of simply displaying links to websites, compiles ready-made answers to our questions. Yes, it also provides the sources of these answers, but it is very difficult for users to change their habits.
Perhaps that’s why OpenAI is also starting work on a web browser. Google also has a very strong position in this market, because Chrome is used by almost 2/3 of web users around the world. Recently, there are even ideas to hand over Chrome to other hands because Google’s position is becoming monopolistic. But before that happens, perhaps change will happen more naturally. As reported by the website The Informationthe market leader in generative artificial intelligence, is working on its own browser – NLWeb (Natural Language Web), which would challenge Chrome’s position.
Such a browser would, of course, be closely integrated with the tools offered by the creators of ChatGPT, including their search engine, which would attract new users. If the browser offered more extensive capabilities than the free ChatGPT service, it would probably be a big magnet for many people. The fact that OpenAI is serious about this product can also be proven by the fact that this year two significant developers from the Chrome team joined the company, including Ben Goodger, who was one of the founders of the team responsible for the browser at Google. Moreover, according to the same report, OpenAI is to tempt Samsung with its technology. Koreans are currently working closely with Google and using the solutions offered by Gemini. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if they started flirting with OpenAI, which also works closely with Apple.
One thing is certain, OpenAI is pushing itself more and more into the market and does not intend to take prisoners. As history shows, the rise from the top to the bottom in the tech industry can be very quick, and Google needs to be on guard.
