OpenAI Unveils Search Engine ‘SearchGPT’ Prototype

Generative AI text tools like ChatGPT scour the internet for text to train their models. Search engines like Google do the same. So what if we combined the two? A new search engine from ChatGPT developer OpenAI has launchedSearchGPT‘This is exactly the kind of service it is.

The Search GPT released by OpenAI is a prototype. waiting listOnly some registered users will have access to SearchGPT. According to OpenAI, SearchGPT is “designed to combine the power of AI models with web information to provide fast, timely answers with clear, relevant resources.” It’s currently a tentative prototype, but at least some of its features will be integrated into ChatGPT’s product and related apps and APIs to expand its reach.

ChatGPT’s language model is a huge and unwieldy data set. Users only have access to periodically updated versions, and the current ChatGPT-4 model was trained on data that stopped being updated in April 2023. Therefore, adding much more up-to-date indexed search data will provide more accurate and timely information to queries and tools that rely on ChatGPT’s various features. For example, ChatGPT-4 can’t accurately tell you the latest information about the 2024 U.S. presidential election, but search engines can get that information right away.

OpenAI has been criticized for training its models on copyrighted pages and data without permission. The SearchGPT announcement seems to acknowledge this criticism. The SearchGPT page states that “OpenAI is partnering with publishers to build this experience and is constantly seeking feedback.” The search engine will also include “ways for publishers to manage how they appear.” The animated example on the SearchGPT introduction page links to the sources of the generated answers.
