How what? Did a contract manufacturer refuse to serve a customer? Where is the world going…
An interesting rumor popped up on X, which is considered a rather dubious news source, because the Jukanlosreve a user operating under the name, in response to a previous post, wrote that TSMC rejected Samsung’s approachso they will not produce Exynos chips. This was picked up by many foreign sites, essentially presented as important news, but the whole thing is so surreal that it is worth explaining more precisely what happened.
The story started in November last year, when Jukanlosreve wrote in another X post that Samsung is considering using TSMC’s manufacturing technology for Exynos chips. He announced this as exclusive information, and in fact, apart from the fact that it was considered a rumor, there was no problem with it, because it is quite possible that Samsung manufactures at TSMC. Intel also manufactures in Taiwan, while it has its own factories, so this was considered a completely realistic scenario. Especially taking into account that the output of Samsung’s modern nodes is not very steely.
The problem is actually with the current post, because it claims that Samsung contacted TSMC, but the Taiwanese contract manufacturer does not want to manufacture the selected chip for them. How what? This is completely illogical and terribly unrealistic. Let’s make this clear, TSMC is a contract manufacturer and does nothing but manufacture the desired product for the customers using their various production technologies. They are effectively offering a service to potential partners, building their business model around it, and now an X post is claiming that this service has been denied to a company. A serious question arises in itself, what guarantees the existing partners that they will not be denied the service? For this reason, it is inconceivable that TSMC would even consider such a thing, since their business model based on basic trust would be executed immediately. Why would anyone plan with TSMC if there was any chance that the Taiwanese giant would say to a potential order next year: we’d rather not manufacture this for you. But the question is why it would be in TSMC’s interest to say this, since it doesn’t matter to them who gets the given production line, as long as the customer is willing to pay the price.
In fact, the above post points to a much more serious problem. The fact is that practically anyone can write anything on X. The platform doesn’t even really check whether these posts are true, today there are also contents that can be factually refuted at the moment of availability, but no one does anything, because the users are useful for the social interface, so you can safely tell such and such lies to communicate. What could be wrong with that? A maximum of a couple of people enter the rebuttal, but that only increases the number of posts and activity on the platform.
The biggest problem of all is that IT media platforms also override this, so news is generated from simple X posts. Now, of course, it is not worth thinking about the original post, it can be realistically reported as a rumor, after all, there is logic in it, TSMC really makes chips for anyone, everything is just a matter of money. But for TSMC to turn down a potential customer is so crazy that it can’t be explained from a business point of view. Provided that we do not consider as an explanation the fact that the person entrusted with the conclusion of the potential deal, existing at the rumor level, got off on the wrong foot. At the same time, it is more logical to assume that the original, exclusive information was not true either, and a quick refutation was needed, because it is timely to explain why the new Exynos will not come from TSMC.
