Sang-Sik Kim Vietnam defeats Thailand to win Mitsubishi Cup
Coach Park Hang-seo, ‘the originator of Vietnam’s success story’, congratulated Kim Sang-sik on winning the Mitsubishi Cup. He said that now is the time for Vietnamese soccer to move beyond Southeast Asia and secure competitiveness throughout Asia.
Vietnam, led by coach Kim Sang-sik, won 3-2 in the second leg of the 2024 Mitsubishi Cup final against Thailand held at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on the 5th (Korean time).
Vietnam, which had won the first game of the finals 2-1 on the 2nd, rose to the top by winning the first and second games with a total of 5-3.
Vietnam, which reached its peak by winning this tournament in 2018 with coach Park Hang-seo, experienced some ups and downs afterward, but regained the top spot after 7 years under coach Kim Sang-sik.
Former coach Park Hang-seo enjoyed watching Vietnam’s historical moments on site.
Coach Park, who took command of the Vietnam national soccer team from 2017 to 2023, is the originator of the ‘Vietnam Magic’ that not only won this tournament but also won two consecutive SEA Games gold medals.
Coach Park, who still has ties to Vietnam, including as an advisor to Bac Ninh FC (Vietnam), said, “I would like to congratulate coach Kim Sang-sik, the coaching staff, the players, and the Vietnam Football Association. “Vietnam fully deserves this achievement,” he said.
He continued, “Vietnam must no longer be satisfied with its glory in Southeast Asia. “The time has come to set a new milestone for competitiveness in Pan-Asia,” he said.
He added, “Although I am now stepping down as coach of the Vietnam national team, I will always wish for and support the development of Vietnamese soccer.”
Meanwhile, Vietnam will enter the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup starting in March. Vietnam competes in Group F along with Malaysia, Nepal and Laos.
