“Firstly, I would like to emphasize once again that all social subsidies and benefits for Tallinn residents will be preserved. This concerns not only public transport, but also various benefits in the field of education and social protection. The goal of the Social Democrats is to strengthen social policy after the next elections. We know that in Estonian politics there are different attitudes to these issues, and, of course, this will depend on the decision of the voter in the next elections – who will form a coalition and with what a strong mandate,” Osinovski said.
He assured that the Social Democrats will continue to defend the principles of the welfare state.
“If we talk about free public transport, we see no reason to cancel it. Firstly, the amounts that can be received in the city budget in this way are insignificant compared to the expenses and investments that are made in this area. Secondly, free public transport has, on the one hand, a partially social component – it helps those people who do not have enough money. On the other hand, it gives a positive signal in the context of general city policy. We want people to use their personal cars less and use public transport more,” concluded the mayor of Tallinn.
