Oura’s fourth generation smart ring is getting smarter and smarter

OR Ouch, the Finnish company that is a pioneer in the field of smart rings, is ready to present its fourth generation ring.

The new model has a sleeker design, longer battery life and smarter sensors that produce even smarter information for users. The company has finally made a perfectly round ring without any engraving on its exterior.

The biggest change made to the Ring 4 is to the sensors, which were previously housed in raised bumps that kept contact with your finger. Now, the sensors are flush with the body, making the ring much smoother and sleeker than before.

These sensor improvements are not only focused on making them smaller, but also on improving their ability to sense our bodies. Oura says the Ring 4 has 18 distinct signal paths, up from eight in the third generation, which is combined with the new ‘Smart Sensing’ algorithm.

This helps a lot as currently if the ring shifts too much you will get inconsistent readings. The company claims the new material offers a 30 percent increase in blood oxygen detection, 31 percent fewer gaps in nighttime heart rate, and 7 percent fewer gaps during the day. Oura hasn’t said what size battery the Ring 4 has, but says the above tweaks will help it get up to eight days of life on a single charge.

The Ring 4 is available in 12 sizes (4-15) and six colors. Silver, Brushed Silver, Gold, Rose Gold, Stealth and Black. Like its predecessor, it is water resistant to depths of up to 100 meters and is suitable for saunas and swimming, but not for deep water diving.

The company is also redesigning its mobile app to group all the data it collects about you into three distinct categories: Today, Vitals, and My Health. The first two of these help you explore your vital signs for the day overall or in detail. My Health, on the other hand, will offer long-term insights such as cardiovascular age, cardio fitness, stress and sleep. This will start rolling out today to all users, regardless of which generation of Ring they own.

The company has decided to make some features available only to users who pay a monthly subscription of $5.99 per month or $70 per year. Now, Ring 4 is getting some new subscription-only features. These include automatic heart rate and activity detection for up to 40 different activities, eliminating the need for users to manually log their stats after a workout. When the app detects symptoms of high stress, it will now place that data in the context of your movement, activities and tags. There’s also a better feature pack for menstruating women, with new insights into fertility windows, with the company saying this is designed to help pregnancy, not prevent it.

The Oura Ring 4 is available for pre-order today, with shipping expected to begin on October 15, 2024, with prices starting at $349. The first month of membership is free.
