Over 40 MW of new solar systems for local communities in Romania

Romania’s current energy mix relies on a variety of domestic resources, with renewable energy sources, natural gas combined with hydrogen and nuclear energy playing a key role. Through the Modernization Fund, an instrument of the European Union, it is planned to build an additional 10 GW of wind and solar energy by the end of 2030, which has already begun.

Following this dynamic, the Romanian Minister of Energy signed 113 grant contracts with local authorities for the construction of solar systems, which will primarily be used for own consumption. The total installed capacity will amount to 41.7 MW, while the total value is 63.6 million euros. The public invitations were part of Romania’s strategic initiative aimed at supporting the development of capacities for the production and storage of electricity from RES called “Key Program 1 – Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Storage”, which is financed from the Modernization Fund, according to the website of the Ministry of Energy of Romania.

This move is part of a wider effort to support local communities in reducing utility costs through energy savings in public institutions such as schools, kindergartens, polyclinics and street lighting. Beneficiaries of these funds include 91 municipalities, nine cities, six municipalities, municipal hospitals and the monastery of Sihastrija.

Shortly before the signing of these contracts, the Ministry of Energy of Romania announced that a total of 150 million euros had been allocated from the European Union Modernization Fund for the financing of electricity storage capacity. It is about a new public invitation that is part of the same strategic initiative of Romania as the signed contracts, which is “Key Program 1 – Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Storage”.

The goal of the public call, as stated in the announcement, is to support investments in electricity storage systems that are connected to existing facilities for the production of energy from renewable sources, including hydroelectric power plants. According to the regulations, warehouses will have to absorb at least 75 percent of energy from connected renewable sources annually.
