Overview of sales of electric vehicles in the EU

In July 2024, according to data from the Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers of Europe (ACEA), which was published by the Serbian Association of Importers, the European Union recorded an average increase in sales of electric vehicles of 0.2 percent. However, there are significant differences from country to country.

As it is stated, Italy recorded a growth of 4.7 percent, Spain of 3.4 percent, while in France a decrease of 2.3 percent of new registered vehicles was recorded. The German market also recorded a drop of 2.1 percent.

Looking at the numbers, in July of this year, 102,795 purely electric vehicles were sold on the European Union market, which represents a market share of 12.1 percent.

“Compared to the same month last year, this represents a weaker result, because then the market share was 13.5 percent. Analysts state that the result is worse even though in Belgium the sale of electric vehicles in July increased by + 44 percent, in the Netherlands + 8.9 and in France + 1.0 percent because in the largest market in Europe, Germany, a decline in the sale of BEV vehicles was registered as much as – 36.8 percent”, according to the website of the Serbian Association of Importers.

Looking from the beginning of 2024, until the month of July, a total of 815,399 electric cars were sold in the European Union.

When it comes to plug-in hybrid vehicles, in July there was a drop of 14.1 percent at the level of the European Union, that is, 57,679 such vehicles were sold. This represents a market share of 6.8 percent, and at the same time a significant drop compared to the same period last year. In total, from the beginning of the year to July, 449,702 plug-in vehicles were sold on the European Union market.

Sales of hybrid vehicles in the European Union continued to grow in July, with sales of 273,003 vehicles. Compared to the same period last year, this is a significant growth of 25.7 percent. As stated, all four of the largest automotive markets of the European Union recorded an increase in sales of hybrid vehicles. France by 47.4 percent, Spain by 31.25 percent, Germany by 22.4 percent and Italy by 17.4 percent.

It should be noted that there is a decline in the sale of diesel vehicles. In July, a decrease of 10.1 percent was recorded, and thus the market share was 12.6 percent. The big drop in sales of these vehicles was in Italy by 24.6 percent, France by 23.9 percent and Spain by 11.6 percent. At the level of the European Union, 107,710 diesel vehicles were sold in July, and from the beginning of the year to July, a total of 837,794 of these vehicles were sold.
