- Xiaomi is preparing its own chipset, it should be introduced next year
- The goal is to reduce dependence on Qualcomm and Mediatek and strengthen the market position
- The new processor should also help with the development of the electric car division and AI functions
According to a new report from Bloomberg, Xiaomi is set to join the ranks of manufacturers own mobile processors. This follows the example of Google, which has been using its Tensor chipsets since 2021, when it introduced the first generation in the Pixel 6 series.
While chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek dominate the Android market today, in addition to Google, Samsung is also experimenting with its own processors (after all, Tensors are manufactured in its factories) with its Exynos series, which it uses mainly in Europe and in cheaper models.
Xiaomi plans to start production of its processors in 2025 and deploy them in their devices in the same year. For the Chinese colossus, this could be a key step towards greater independence. Although the company has worked closely with Qualcomm for a long time and is often the first to introduce phones with the latest Snapdragons (currently the Xiaomi 15 series with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip), its own processor will allow it to better differentiate itself in the Android market and optimize performance according to its needs.
Google has shown with the Tensor chips that in-house development can bring interesting advantages – while the processors lag behind the Snapdragons in pure performance and battery life, they have the upper hand in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The abilities in AI could be one of the reasons why even Xiaomi is going its own way.
It is not yet clear how exactly the new chip should differ from Qualcomm’s current solutions. According to analysts, it could also find application in Xiaomi’s growing electric car division, where it would provide the company with greater control over the supply chain and give it more opportunity to optimize performance. Independence from American technology is also an advantage at a time when geopolitical tensions are undoubtedly rising and Xiaomi wants to avoid what Huawei paid for years ago.
