Ozempic: sales of this antidiabetic drug sought after for weight loss break records and it is already the fifth most expensive medicine for the SUS

NLast year, on average, more than 33 thousand packages were sold in Portuguese pharmacies per month of semaglutide, the active substance in Ozempic, the medicine recommended for type II diabetes that has become famous for its weight loss effect. According to data from the National Medicines Authority (Infarmed), sales continue to increase, registering an increase of 10.7% compared to 2023. The unprecedented demand, especially for weight loss, has created great difficulties for diabetics, who often face waiting lists to access the medication, and even led to a stockout last summer.
