In August 2018, before the official launch of Apple TV+, Apple bought the rights to the film adaptation of the novel “Pachinko” by Min Jin Lee. The series based on it debuted in the aforementioned service’s catalog only in March 2022. The premiere of its second season is scheduled for next month. Apple has published the official trailer for the new episodes.
“Pachinko” tells the story of several generations of a family of Korean emigrants. The story begins in the early 20th century, when a young girl living in occupied Korea becomes unplanned pregnant by a married man. To avoid public humiliation, she marries a Christian pastor, with whom she moves to Japan. The book on which the series is based was published in 2017 and gained considerable recognition among readers and reviewers. It was listed among the best novels of the year by Esquire, The Guardian and The New York Times magazines and was nominated for the prestigious National Book Award. The series adaptation has so far managed to win, among others, Peabody, Gotham and AFI awards.
“Pachinko” stars Yuh-Jung Youn (Oscar winner for “Minari”), Lee Minho, Jin Ha and Minha Kim. The series was written and produced by Soo Hugh (“The Terror,” “The Investigation,” “Under the Dome” and “See”). Leanne Welham, Arvin Chen and Sang-il Lee directed episodes in the second season.
The second season of “Pachinko” will consist of eight episodes. The premiere of the first one is scheduled for August 23. The next ones will be released every week on Friday. The first season is available to watch in its entirety on Apple TV+.
