Every motorist knows that you cannot simply leave your car somewhere for free in a big city. Yet it is no longer self-evident, even in small towns. More and more municipalities are deciding to establish or expand paid parking zones. Research commissioned by EenVandaag shows that paid parking areas in our country have grown by no less than 23.4 percent since 2022. For comparison: in the previous ten years there was about 30 percent growth. Things have suddenly accelerated considerably in recent years. Municipalities can of course see paid parking as a lucrative source of income, but according to Professor Bert van Wee, there is probably something else at play. He states at EenVandaag that due to the growth of the Dutch vehicle fleet, there is simply less and less parking space and it is therefore logical that you have to pay at more and more places.
