Panasonic Toughbook launches its first AI-enabled rugged tablet

Panasonic now launches Toughbook G2mk3 – the first Toughbook tablet, with edge processing for AI.

The G2mk3 is equipped with the Intel AI Boost neural processor (NPU), significantly increasing efficiency and accuracy for mobile workers across industries.

The standalone AI capabilities without the need for a network connection help mobile workers analyze errors, deliver information and perform administrative tasks faster. Launched this week at INTERGEO 2024 in Stuttgart – the leading global geo-information and land management event – the G2mk3 pushes the boundaries of what’s possible from a mobile, rugged device designed for any environment and with any application .

Market-leading AI-enabled robust computing and performance

The new 10.1-inch TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 is the first rugged tablet running Windows 11 Pro, offering edge processing for AI, and it uses Intel The Core Ultra 5 processor 135U (with Intel vPro technology). This has a dedicated AI chipset that allows it to collect, store and analyze data using artificial intelligence in places where a connection to the cloud is not available – and without affecting the overall performance and processing power of the G2mk3.

This is particularly useful for utility workers – especially those inspecting equipment in remote locations that may not have access to a cellular or wireless connection – to use AI to increase efficiency, productivity and reduce human error in data collection during inspection .

TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 also has updated DDR5x RAM of 16GB (upgradable to 32GB). This provides superior performance and computing power, giving hyper-mobile workers seamless and fast access to AI-enabled applications.

Dirk Weigelt, Senior Product & Solutions Manager at Panasonic TOUGHBOOK, says: “Hypermobile employees using rugged tablets often work in challenging environments under great pressure. They therefore require a versatile, ergonomic and user-friendly device that can also run mission-critical, data-heavy applications. As Panasonic’s most powerful, rugged tablet, the AI-enabled TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 is a game-changer that opens up new possibilities in rugged mobility.”

New camera increases versatility

The G2mk3’s 13MP rear camera is superior to most other rugged tablets on the market, and comparable to modern consumer devices. Its improved sensor delivers better images in low light and varying lighting conditions. It is ideal for capturing high-resolution images in environments where adverse lighting conditions would normally be a problem.

When combined with the device’s edge capabilities for AI, the 13 MP camera enables field workers to take advantage of computer vision technology. For example, in electrical field services, where field workers have access to wiring diagrams and schematics on the G2mk3, users can use computer vision to see exactly where wire connections need to be—increasing productivity and efficiency.

Backward compatibility maximizes investment

Durability and backward compatibility are important considerations in Panasonic’s strategy when developing new rugged devices. This is evident in the latest TOUGHBOOK G2, where more than 80% of the ecosystem from the first two editions is compatible with the G2mk3. This maximizes and protects existing customer investments in the G2 Series throughout the device’s lifecycle.

This is crucial in sectors such as emergency services, where there is a great deal of attention to existing investments. For example, the same in-vehicle docking platform is used as the G2mk1 and G2mk2, eliminating the need to take vehicles off the road to update technology. This reduces vehicle downtime, while familiarity with the device increases efficiency for emergency services when quick response and triage times are critical.
The latest TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 remains one of the most customizable, modular rugged tablets available. This is particularly important in the defense sector, where the G2mk3’s top and rear expansion areas fit a wide range of peripherals, such as fingerprint readers and MicroSD cards, improving data and device security and accessibility for users in the field.

No compromise on battery life, connectivity and durability

Despite the vastly improved camera, a more efficient AI-enabled Intel CPU and overall increased performance, the G2mk3 offers 11 hours of battery life on a single battery (with extended battery up to 15 hours) based on MobileMark 25). This represents an increase of up to 47% compared to the G2mk2.

This gives hyper-mobile workers in emergency services, defence, field services, logistics and surveying complete peace of mind when using power-hungry applications. It also allows them to continue working for longer, maximizing efficiency and productivity when they need it most.

TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 also offers 5G-ready connectivity out of the box, enhanced Bluetooth capabilities and market-leading IP65-rated dust and water resistance, independently tested to MIL-STD 810H and IEC 60529 standards.

Panasonic TOUGHBOOK is exhibiting in Hall 1, Stand C1.057 at INTERGEO 2024. You can find more information about the TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 by clicking here: www.toughbook.eu
