Jaguar is struggling with fire problems with the I-Pace. The risk of fire results in a recall of the cars and a striking piece of advice: ‘Park your car outside, not inside.’
Jaguar is recalling several I-Paces produced in 2019. There is probably a problem with the anode in the battery that can cause an explosion. A problem that previously occurred with the Chevrolet Bolt (which we know in Europe as the Opel Ampera-E). Around 100,000 cars were recalled worldwide at the time and the costs rose to 1.8 billion euros.
Jaguar I-Pace
It is not known exactly how many of the I-Pace there are, but in the United States there are said to be 2,760. There have now been three fires after software updates, of which Jaguar states that the update does not achieve an adequate safety level. The problem arises with the anode in the battery, which is made by LG Energy Solutions.
The recall is a software update from Jaguar that allows the car to charge up to 80 percent. In addition, Jaguar advises to charge the cars outside for a month after the update and also not to park them inside. If the car catches fire, it will be in a controlled place so that it quickly spreads to a building.
To sell
The I-Pace came out well in our test. In 2018, Rutger drove the car, which for the first time had the same range as a Tesla. We expected to see a lot of them on the road. According to the figures, that is not the case: where 2018 still had a peak of 3,526 units sold, in 2019 that had already dropped to 779, then 466 and then numbers that could be counted on hands and feet. If you see them more often now, it is probably mainly because they have to leave the house and go out on the street.
