The Vila de Martorell Award celebrates 50 years of promoting and stimulating literary creation, through different formats and especially in the area of local authors. The deadline for submitting works to this new edition is open until February 20 via the web premivila.martorell.cat. The award has the categories of Catalan Poetry, Castilian Poetry, Translation of Classics, Microrelat and Local Awards.
The new president of the Premi Vila is the writer Andreu González Castro, who won the 39th Premi Vila in 2014 with Apuntes para un atlas and was part of the jury. “It’s been 50 years since the trajectory of this prize, which was born by holding a poetry competition in Catalan and Spanish, and which has been spreading, incorporating different modalities such as the micro-story or the local prizes, a seedbed of future promises in literature local”, expresses the Martorellenc.

In the section of Catalan Poetry and Castilian Poetry “the poetry must be original, unpublished, with a minimum length of 500 verses. Only one work per author can be submitted in each modality. The prize will be 2,500 euros for the best book in each of the languages and the edition of the work”, explains the secretary of the prize, Josefina Canals.
In the category of Translation of Classics Memorial Montserrat Ros “it will be necessary to submit the translation project into Catalan of a Greek or Latin literary work from antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Byzantine period or the Renaissance”. Adesiara Editorial will publish the award-winning work in a bilingual edition (Greek/Catalan or Latin/Catalan) and incorporate it into its catalog. “The length of the translation cannot be less than 75 pages and the award will be 2,500 euros”, he adds.

In Microrelat, “young people and adults can submit original and unpublished texts of a maximum of 1,000 characters. Two works per author can be submitted, written in Catalan or Spanish, and the prize is 400 euros”, explains Canals.

In the category of Local Awards “residents of Martorell or associated with the town’s cultural entities and teachers who work in schools can be submitted. They must also be original and unpublished works, and only one work from the same participant per category, written in Catalan or Spanish, will be accepted.

The Local Prize for Adults will be for books of poems (minimum 500 verses) or prose books (between 100 and 250 pages) with a prize of 900 euros, a writing workshop in Martorell and the edition of the work winner, be it a book of poems or a book of prose. You can also submit a short story of between 3 and 8 pages with an award of 150 euros and a writing workshop, or a poem of 25 verses maximum, which will be recognized with 150 euros.
A report on the history of Martorell can be presented at the Local Award for Adults and Young People. The work must be unpublished, the photographs must have copyright and detail the bibliography used. In addition to adults, as far as young people are concerned, ESO and Baccalaureate students can participate. Those who wish can also present it individually. the prize will be 150 euros and a writing workshop.
In the Children and Youth section of the Local Award, each school will select from its students a maximum of 3 works from each cycle (story or poem). Children and young people can also send it individually. The best works will win tickets to the amusement parks of Tibidabo or Port Aventura, as well as writing workshops or cash.
All the winning students have a batch of promotional material from the Francesc Pujols Library and the radio reading of the work on the ‘Martorelletres’ programme, from Ràdio Martorell. The winning works are included in a notebook in the Library’s local Collection.
The Jury of the Vila Prize in Catalan and Spanish Poetry will be chaired by Andreu González Castro and will have “the company of some well-known people in the country’s letters such as Marta Pessarrodona Artigues, Award of Honor for Catalan Letters, with Martorellen roots and a long career; Jordi Julià Garriga, university professor who was already part of the previous jury; and the poets with several publications and awards Jordi Boladeres Sancho and Sònia Moll Gamboa”.

For the rest of the awards, other renowned personalities such as Jaume Pòrtulas Ambròs, Pere J. Quetglas Nicolau, Carles-Jordi Guardiola Noguera, Jordi Raventós Barlam, Susana Camps Perarnau, Mònica Fulquet Tenas and Jesús Lana Voltà, Gemma Pellicer Bertrand will form part of the jury , Erika Bermejo Santiago, Alba Bohigas Condal, Jordi Morera Oliveras, Salomé Orteu Mesalles, Mercè Parera Raspall and Montserrat Torras Salvat. Josefina Canals Estruch will act as secretary.
In this fiftieth anniversary, “instead of commissioning the poster from the creators of the town, as in other years, it is the painter Joan-Pere Viladecans who illustrates a magnificent poster, which is already on the basis of the competition and which will be part of the memory of this award on this special occasion”, underlines González.
