Domestic. If World War III breaks out, large parts of the Swedish army are expected to fight in Finland and the Baltics. This means that the Armed Forces are forced to prioritize Stockholm, Gotland and Gothenburg but leave large parts of Sweden without defense, according to the army commander.

When large parts of the Swedish army are sent outside Sweden’s borders, areas in Sweden are left defenseless, despite the fact that there is a threat to Swedish territory, according to army commander Jonny Lindfors.

According to him, an enemy could try to disrupt supply by blowing up bridges, affecting warehouses or stores, railway junctions, airports and so on. Meanwhile, the army will be elsewhere.

– It will leave gaps in northern Sweden, in the middle of Sweden. Stockholm and Gotland will still be prioritized and defended. And we will of course also defend the west coast, because it is a central place for Sweden’s livelihood. But if you move units from Sweden, there will naturally be a void, he says SVT News.

The armed forces are therefore discussing rebuilding the territorial defence, consisting of slightly older soldiers who can supplement the Home Guard and operate in sparsely populated areas. So far, however, nothing has happened and large parts of the country are practically undefended in the event of an outbreak of war in Finland or the Baltics.
