According to the Miami Herald, Spirit Airlines Flight 951, which was hit by bullets, landed safely at Santiago Airport in the Dominican Republic.
Spirit Airlines spokesperson said in a statement that the plane that landed at Santiago Airport was taken out of service due to minor damage caused by bullets, as a result of initial investigations, and only one flight attendant was slightly injured in the incident.
The spokesman noted that the passengers who landed in the Republic of Dominica were taken back to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on a new plane. “The safety of our passengers and flight attendants is our top priority and we have suspended our service to Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien until further notice.” he said.
Following the incident, all commercial flights at Toussaint Louverture International Airport, the capital of Haiti, were stopped, while all airlines in the USA suspended flights to Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.
WHAT HAPPENED?
According to the United Nations (UN) Integrated Office in Haiti, 3,900 people have died as a result of attacks by armed gangs since the beginning of 2024, 1374 of which occurred in the last 6 months.
Haiti, which has been struggling with fundamental problems such as political, economic and security crises for many years, is in danger of famine with its population exceeding 11 million.
Violence is increasing day by day in the country, where armed gangs control 80 percent of the capital Port-au Prince.
