PC gaming bigger than all consoles combined

A new report from Epyllion gives us a solid overview of the gaming industry over the past ten years and it’s clear that PC gaming has taken the lead. In over 200 pages, the report analyzes everything from consumer spending to hardware records, and the numbers show that PCs are running away from consoles by a wide margin.

Since 2011, spending on gaming content on PC has been a whopping 65 percent higher than on consoles, and overall, PC has pulled in 225 percent more money than all console platforms combined. It’s about $30 billion, which only applies to software, not hardware. The console platforms have seen an increase of $18 billion since 2011.

However, mobile gaming still dominates when it comes to revenue.

Epyllion’s report highlights several reasons why PC gaming attracts more and more players, such as significantly larger game libraries and extensive backwards compatibility, lower start-up costs, better competitive games, access to early access titles and console-exclusive titles being released for PC more and more often compared to before year. Then, of course, a big factor is that computers can be equipped with hardware that far exceeds the hardware in the consoles for a nicer gaming experience with better fluidity.

Console sales have declined in the current generation compared to previous ones, while PCs continue to grow. Playstation 5 has sold 65 million copies, while Xbox Series X/S is just under 30 million. The Switch stands out with its 146 million units sold, but is technically not counted in the current console generation.

Although a lot of focus is on game consoles of various kinds, it is clear that PC gaming is not going anywhere. Whether it’s about better gaming experiences, more choices or a bigger community, it’s not hard to understand why so many choose to bet on PC.
