Current political crises in the world can also be solved through existing international institutions, through pragmatic cooperation that can lead to an increase in trust between members of the United Nations. This was announced by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini in a speech at the Summit for the Future, which is one of the key events of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York. The TASR special reporter informs about it.

At the very beginning of his speech, the President stated that there is a strong polarization in the UN Security Council, which, according to him, can be overcome. “What was considered the very best in most sectors ten years ago is now slower than average. If it applies to business or everyday life, why shouldn’t it apply to politics and international cooperation?” asked Pellegrini in his speech.

According to him, in this case, we cannot afford “meaningless discussions”, as, according to him, happened in the case of the debate about climate change and whether it is happening at all. “We have to react to the facts, and not deny them,” he appealed.

In the post, he named several current crises in the world – he drew attention to an unprecedented number of conflicts and violations of humanitarian law, together with the highest number of refugees worldwide and climate change. He also commented on artificial intelligence, which, according to him, can also help in finding answers to crises.

During the development of technologies, he pointed out the need to protect a person’s digital identity, which, according to him, is becoming as important as physical identity. “We have to create the conditions for what I call ‘digital humanism’. Thus, we need to define rights and obligations in the virtual world and – what is equally important – also tools for their effective enforcement,” he emphasized.

According to him, the opportunity to express one’s opinion in the digital environment should not be restricted, but should be guided by similar principles as in the real world. “So full responsibility and a clear identity,” he explained.

Pellegrini expressed his support for the Pact for the Future, the proposal of which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on Sunday. The 42-page document aims to unite the world’s nations – even those at odds with each other – to jointly address the challenges of the 21st century, including climate change, artificial intelligence, rising inequality and poverty.
