Slovak President Peter Pellegrini opened the new school year on Monday at the Primary School (ZŠ) of the Free Slovak Broadcaster in Banská Bystrica, which he himself attended in the past. He wished the students much success, but also drew attention to the lack of teachers in education and the pitfalls brought by modern technologies.
A touching comeback
“It was also very moving for me, because I am a graduate of this school. I am extremely happy that today I was able to open the school year at the school of the Free Slovak Broadcaster, just in the year when we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising,”
said Pellegrini.
The President stated that when he visited the school he once attended, he realized a big generational difference, when today’s students are surrounded by modern technologies on a daily basis. “I wished the children to find the right balance between technology and real life, to remember to move and to prefer always live friends to virtual ones. To avoid various hoaxes and false information on social networks,” said Pellegrini.
What did he wish for education?
The president wished Slovak education a successful school year. He also reminded that it is currently undergoing a major transformation and hundreds of other schools are switching to a new teaching method. He also drew attention to the lack of qualified teachers. “Just as there is a shortage of doctors and nurses in the healthcare sector, Slovakia is also facing a shortage of quality educators,” stated Pellegrini.
ZŠ Free Slovak Broadcaster was founded in 1958 and bears the name of the radio organization that provided broadcasting during the Slovak National Uprising. In addition to the president, the school year was opened here by the mayor of Banská Bystrica, Ján Nosko, who especially praised the school’s excellent results.
“I want to wish you the same success this year as in the previous period. So that you can create a good relationship and a triangle between the student, parent and teacher,”
said Nosko.
