The “Pemci 1” heating plant in Kladovo stood out as the first in Serbia to become a buyer-producer of electricity thanks to the successful installation of a 50 kW solar power plant, supported by the USAID “Better Energy” program.

The solar power plant was built by the company MT-KOMEX, a leader in the field of solar technologies on the domestic market and beyond.

The heating plant is specific because it combines, in addition to solar panels, the use of biomass, which contributes to increasing energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Thanks to the project, the heating plant will provide clean energy for about 2,500 households in our country.

As the project confirms commitment to renewable energy sources, and represents the continuation of successful cooperation between Serbia and the United States of America, the heating plant was visited by the Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, and the American Ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill. In addition to them, the president of the municipality of Kladovo, Saša Nikolić, as well as the executive director of the heating plant, Zoran Petrović, were also present.

The relevant minister presented data on the significant increase in the capacity of energy production from renewable sources in Serbia, stating that the capacity of consumers increased from 6 MW to over 65 MW in the last year and a half. The plan is to increase the capacity of solar power plants in Serbia from 20 MW to 150 MW by the end of 2024.

Also, there are expectations from the minister that USAID, through the “Better Energy” project, could also support a software solution for efficient management of energy consumption in the aforementioned heating plant in order to further reduce costs.
