In the 9th election held in Romania, a member of the European Union (EU) and NATO, 13 candidates are competing to become the new president of the country.

If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the votes for the 5-year presidential term, the second round of the election will be held on Sunday, December 8.

According to the polls, the prominent candidates include Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who has the support of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which is the largest party in the country, George Simion, leader of the far-right Romanians’ Unity Alliance (AUR), former NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana, and Elena from the Save the Romanian Union Party. The voting process starts at 07.00 local time and will end at 21.00. The first unofficial results are expected to be announced before midnight.
