The figures speak for themselves: more and more marmots are being killed in Savoie. According to AJAS (Savoie Animal Justice Association), more than 500 animals were slaughtered in 2023, an increase of 22% in one year.
An emblematic animal of the mountains
What if we put an end to this hunting? This is what this association is asking, which would like marmot hunting to be banned completely in Savoie. And it is apparently not the only one: The petition recently posted online on this subject has already passed the 90,000 signature mark.
While hunters believe that there is no point in letting them multiply, nature conservationists do not agree.
The marmot is an emblematic animal of our mountains. A victim of global warming, its population has been declining since the 1990s… Yet it continues to be hunted!

Hunting banned in Italy since 1992
Thus, this animal, symbol of Savoie, should on the contrary be the subject of reinforced protection. Although it is a protected animal, its hunting remains anchored in the traditions and cultural practices of the Alps. It is therefore authorized to hunt marmots in certain departments of France from mid-September.
However, the marmot is protected by the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats. France is a signatory to it. While hunting it has been banned in Italy since 1992, the French government considers that only strictly protected fauna species listed in Appendix II of the Bern Convention are protected species. This is not the case for the marmot.
