The best Philips TV of 2024 was already able to shine in our XXL test, but the television’s software was not yet free of errors. Now Philips is following up with a new software version.

Our detailed test report on the Philips OLED959 has shown that there is huge potential in the best Philips TV of the year, but the TV’s software still needs fine-tuning:

Philips promised extensive optimizations against digital television, which are now coming true with the first major software update.

In particular, the banding problem has been almost completely resolved with the new software version and the artifact suppression shows even better results than the OLED909 thanks to the dual engine of the OLED959.

In a direct comparison of the old and new software, the progress is clearly visible.

With the new software version, brightness transitions appear much smoother and artifacts are efficiently suppressed. This is particularly beneficial for HDR film content.

In the new update, the HDR clipping has also been adjusted, which is why details in bright image areas are reproduced more naturally, even using the OLED959’s HDR optimization.

Other improvements in the software update include the OLED959’s sound presets. In order to achieve a rich sound character, the equalizer previously had to be adjusted manually in order to get the best quality from the speaker system. The current software version now offers audibly better sound presets, so that manual corrections are hardly necessary anymore.

The Ambilight Plus control has also been optimized. Movies in Cinemascope format (black bars at the top and bottom of the screen) are displayed flicker-free with the new software version. In addition, Philips’ Ambilight presets are constantly being improved, so manual corrections should hardly be necessary in the future.

Philips is planning additional improvements with further software updates, so that the rare artifacts and dropouts when using the intermediate image calculation should soon become unnecessary. A more natural image preset in game mode would also be desirable.

The Philips 65OLED959 is already at the forefront with the current software version and thus deserves our rating upgrade: picture lovers with a penchant for a dynamic Ambilight presentation can no longer ignore the best Philips TV of the year.
