Philips Evnia 49M2C8900 / Gaming monitor with QD OLED panel and Ambiglow effects

The display panel of this curved, extremely wide-angle gaming monitor with a resolution of 5120 × 1440 pixels combines the advantages of OLED and Quantum Dot technologies. Each pixel is autonomous and self-radiating. Either it emits light of the specified color or it is turned off, which in practice means that black is really black, resulting in high contrast. Quantum Dot technology increases brightness and expands the spectrum of displayable colors. The maximum brightness depends on the number of points to be applied simultaneously. The manufacturer states that 100% of the pixels can reach 250 nits, or 10% of the pixels in HDR can reach 450 nits, and if the maximum brightness is applied to only 3% of the pixels, they can reach a brightness of up to 1000 nits.

The technology of Ambiglow lighting effects adds to the positive impression of the monitor, especially if its rear wall is close to a wall, preferably white or light, the lighting effects will be reflected on it. In addition, the illuminated area around the screen, whose colors are synergistic with the displayed content, enhances the experience of playing games or watching videos and reduces eye fatigue. You can turn on the white backlight during normal work. If the player has a table placed so that the back wall faces the room, everyone who comes in will first see the design of the back wall of the monitor, including the lighting effects. The stand allows the display panel to be shifted in height by 12 cm, rotated by 20 degrees to the sides and tilted forward by 5 degrees and backward by 15 degrees.

With this monitor, it is definitely not the case that the built-in speakers are additional equipment. There are four, two treble plus two bass, while each of them can play 7.5 W without distortion. I was very pleasantly surprised by their sound, including the spatial attribute. The sound system of the monitor supports DTS. There is, of course, also a 3.5 mm jack connector for connecting headphones or external speakers.

The user interface is controlled using a practical mini joystick in the right corner of the back wall. The OSD menu is adapted to the primary purpose of the monitor for gamers. You have predefined display profiles for different game genres. The implicit standard mode is perfect for graphic work. The manufacturer declares 127.4% NTSC color space coverage, 153.1% sRGB, 125.2% Adobe RGB and 99% DCI-P3. With a gaming monitor, HDR support is a matter of course. Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 values approaching 100% indicate that the monitor is also a good choice for amateur and semi-professional graphic designers, photographers or video editors.

I recommend connecting via DisplayPort or the USB-C connector when the maximum refresh rate is 144 Hz. Connecting via HDMI allows you to reach 60 Hz. Latency is 0.03 ms. The display supports AMD Free Sync Premium Pro technology for adaptive synchronization. The monitor supports the KVM function, which allows you to use a keyboard, mouse, or other peripherals connected to the monitor’s USB hub with multiple computers.

I tested the monitor with a gaming PC with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics, which I mainly use for video editing. The subjective impression of the display in, for example, the game Halo or Microsoft Flight Simulator is excellent, even at 60 Hz when connected via HDMI. This is due to the properties of the OLED display panel. In Halo, but also in some strategy games, I appreciated the Stark ShadowBoost function, which allows you to see more details in the shadows. You can choose three levels of this feature. Due to the OLED technology enabling the display of deep shades of black, this function is more than useful. Players have multiple modes available. FPS improves dark themes in games so you can better see hidden objects in dark areas. Race mode adapts the display through lower latency, high color levels and other image adjustments. The RTS (Real Time Strategy) mode offers a special SmartFrame mode to highlight a specific area and allows you to adjust both the size and image. Player 1 and Player 2 modes allow you to save customized settings according to different games to ensure the best performance.

Thanks to the relatively mild curvature with a radius of 1800R, the monitor is also excellent for classic work with documents, especially if you have several application windows next to each other. You get used to the curvature very quickly and after a few minutes you don’t even notice it anymore.

PROS, CONS:

+ Excellent image and sound, true colors, Ambiglow light effects, KVM support
– Nothing important
