Plane crashes in South Korea, killing 179 of 181 on board

A passenger plane skidded off the runway while landing at a South Korean airport and crashed. Of the 181 passengers on board, 179 were killed.

The accident happened at the Muan International Airport early on Sunday (December 29). News from The Guardian.

According to the media, there were 175 passengers and 6 crew members in the Jeju Air plane at the time of the accident. It came from Thailand and crashed while landing at Muan International Airport. Only two of them were rescued alive. Among them is a passenger and a crew member. The remaining 179 people were killed.

Citing the head of the local fire service, Reuters reported that the fire at the accident site has been extinguished. Besides, two crew members were rescued from the back of the plane. There is one man and one woman among them.

South Korean news agency Yonhap reported the crash was believed to have been caused by a ‘landing gear malfunction resulting from a collision with a bird’ while attempting to land at the airport in the country’s southwest. All the passengers of the plane were killed except the two who were rescued.

In the video of the incident, it was seen that the authorities are doing rescue work in the back of the crashed plane. Fire and smoke were seen coming out of different parts of the plane.

The office of South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, said the president had ordered rescue operations to be carried out appropriately. Last Friday, Choi Sang Mok took over as the country’s interim leader.
