A workshop of the project entitled “Technical assistance for the establishment of a regional waste management system for the City of Novi Sad and the municipalities of the Novi Sad region”, funded by the European Union, was recently held in Novi Sad. The meeting brought together key representatives of the City of Novi Sad and the surrounding municipalities of Bačka Palanka, Bački Petrovac, Beočin, Žabalj, Srbobran, Temerin and Vrbas, as well as representatives of public utility companies.
Vanja Petković, member of the City Council in charge of ecology, energy efficiency and environmental protection, pointed out that the construction of the Regional Center for Waste Management is scheduled to begin in 2025, with the completion of the project by 2031 with the support of IPA funds of the European Union.
She also highlighted significant city initiatives that contribute to environmental awareness and better waste management. “In May, we opened the first of three planned recycling yards, investing about 190 million dinars, while the Ministry of Environmental Protection invested an additional 32 million dinars in equipment. In addition, we installed 376 containers for glass, 60 underground containers for PET packaging and 100 blue bells for paper packaging waste, and we plan to further expand the capacity for recycling by the end of the year,” said Petković.
In Novi Sad, about 1,500 tons of waste are disposed of daily, of which 400 to 500 tons are municipal waste, and the rest is construction material. The city has launched a number of initiatives to adequately recycle or reuse this waste, which is in line with the city’s broader environmental goals.
The construction project of the Regional Center for Waste Management is a key element in Novi Sad’s strategy for environmental protection and sustainable development.
