After a long series of rumors, Sony has officially revealed the PlayStation 5 Pro. The more powerful version of the PS5 promises to run games with either better graphics, or smoother with the same graphics as the normal PS5. It doesn’t come cheap: 799.99 euros.
The regular PlayStation 5 will be four years old in November. In between, a slightly slimmed-down model was released, but it is still just as powerful. This new model is more powerful, as the PS4 Pro did in 2016 compared to the PS4. This already happened three years after the introduction of the PS4, at the end of 2013.
More power and AI
The PS5 Pro is more powerful than the regular PS5 in three ways. It has a 67 percent larger graphics processor, more advanced ray tracing, and uses AI to upscale images. Together, this results in 45 percent faster game rendering. That means Pro players no longer have to choose between Fidelity and Performance: games on the PS5 Pro can run at even greater detail than the regular PS5, while still running at 60 frames per second. The PS5 has to downgrade to 30 frames per second for the most stunning graphics in most games.
Games will be handled at best by the PS5 Pro out of the box, but developers can also earn an “Enhanced” label, signifying that those games are actively taking advantage of all the Pro’s power. That label will come to the following games via an update: Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
Quite expensive
That extra power doesn’t come for free: the PlayStation 5 Pro costs €799.99, and that’s without a disc drive. It can be purchased separately for €119.99. That adds up to a total of €920 for a PS5 Pro whose games you want to be able to resell. For comparison, the regular PS5 currently costs €449 without a disc, and €539 with a disc drive.
The PS5 Pro otherwise looks quite similar to the regular PS5, but with a noticeable black band running diagonally across the side. The PlayStation 5 Pro is available from November 7, and can be pre-ordered from September 26.
