At least they are currently working on such a standard.
A newly published patent from Sony reveals a unique controller accessory that would allow the PlayStation DualSense controller to be turned into a weapon to enhance the gaming experience. Sony has filed a number of hardware and software patents in recent years, and this latest post provides insight into the research and development efforts of one of the largest companies in the video game industry.
While many fans are focused on the latest PlayStation game announcements or the recently released PlayStation 5 Pro console, others are also keeping an eye on the Japanese conglomerate’s behind-the-scenes projects. Sony continues to file interesting technology patents, and this unique controller accessory is one of the latest hardware development efforts. According to a patent filed in June 2024 and published on January 2, 2025, Sony is working on a weapon attachment accessory that would allow gamers to add a “trigger” to their existing DualSense controller.
According to the patent, the gun’s “trigger” attachment would attach to the bottom of the DualSense controller, allowing players to hold the modified controller sideways and use the space between the R1 and R2 buttons as a crosshair. This accessory could especially enhance the experience in shooters or action-adventure titles, although there is currently no guarantee that this accessory will ever be available to consumers.
Figures 14 and 15 of the patent show how the modified hardware device would paint when held in the hand, similar to a handgun.
In Figure 3, fans can see exactly how they would attach the accessory to the bottom of the DualSense controller.
Figures 12 and 13 also show how the gun mount can be paired with a VR headset and other possible accessories, although these other elements are not discussed in detail in the patent.
As with many other exciting Sony video game technology patents, gamers will have to wait for a possible official announcement before expecting this weapon accessory to hit the market.
