PMLP sends an important reminder to parents of schoolchildren

Ahead of the school holidays, when residents often travel abroad, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) urges parents to arrange identification documents for their children in advance, as well as check the validity of their own documents.

When crossing the Latvian border, each family member, regardless of age, must have a valid identity document – passport or eID card. A child’s birth certificate is not an identity document.

«We urge parents to prepare documents for their children in advance so that traveling abroad does not cause unnecessary hassle.“, calls on the head of PMLP Myra Rose.

When preparing documents for children, parents should consider 4 important points:

Firstly, When preparing documents, a child under 13 years old must visit the department with his parents only once – either when issuing an identity document or when receiving it. Starting from the age of 14, a child is required to come in person to collect his or her identity document.

Secondlyif the child can be photographed (that is, he sits independently and allows himself to be photographed at the right time), photography is carried out in the PMLP department. If it is not possible to take a photograph of the child, you must provide a photograph taken in a photo studio to be included in the identification document.

Thirdlywhen preparing documents for a child, the parent must present his or her personal identification document, as well as hand over the child’s previous identification document, if one was issued.

Fourthif an entry about a child must be made in the parent’s passport, the passport must be left at the department for 10 working days. If you need to make an entry about a child in your passport, we recommend asking a customer service specialist about this already at the stage of document registration in order to avoid the need to perform this procedure later.
