Poe: The first AI teddy bear that tells stories to children

THE generative AI now appears everywhere. Now, it takes place in the teddy bears too! THE Poe, the teddy bear of AI stories, is the first stuffed toy to use artificial intelligence software to create and read stories to children. It will hit stores sometime in August and cost $50.

THE Skyrocket, a Los Angeles-based toy maker, is launching Poe as part of PLAi, its artificial intelligence toy brand. The company entered into a multi-year partnership with AI ElevenLabs to provide the voice of Poe and future PLAi games. No two stories Poe tells are the same. Stories are created using Microsoft Azure and the ChatGPT 4oa chatbot from OpenAI, and are provided on-demand with a kid-friendly app.

Game makers are exploring how AI can hold a child’s interest for longer. The app and voice of this teddy bear are still being perfected, but we know it creates a story. Poe works with four AA batteries and needs an app to create new stories. The generated sound files are sent to the teddy bear via a Bluetooth connection, and his mouth moves to “speak” when he plays the sound. Poe doesn’t always need the app to tell a story. You can save your favorite stories in the teddy bear and play them at any time by pressing his ears.

The application has a simple design. It guides the child through a series of pictures, representing characters, objects and locations, to select the elements of their story. The options go beyond the usual ones they are in a fairy tale. You can combine a story with a witch, a social media influencer, an alien warlord, a zombie and an archaeologist. The more that is added to the story, the weirder it gets. The Skyrocket team has a number of safeguards in place to ensure that a story does not contain controversial content, such as a story about murder. The baby bear’s voice is also generated by AI, which converts text to speech. All this happens within seconds of pressing the button “Make Up Story” in practice.
