Today, Poland assumed the presidency of the EU Council and in the next six months will support activities that strengthen all dimensions of European security – external, internal, economic, energy, information, food and health.
Poland takes over the second rotating presidency of the EU at a time of uncertainty and fear, as it grapples with the consequences of Russian aggression against Ukraine, amid heightened geopolitical tensions, erosion of the rules-based international order, and hybrid attacks on European democracy and security.
When it comes to enlargement, the head of diplomacy, Radoslav Sikorski, said that during the presidency, Poland will ensure the appropriate speed and quality of EU enlargement to the East and South.
– Our goal is progress in relations with Ukraine, Moldova, as well as the Western Balkans. Progress in the accession process should be proportionate to the participation of EU candidates – said Sikorski earlier.
The head of diplomacy also said that Poland will support Georgia’s pro-European aspirations, as well as that Warsaw wants the EU and Turkey to take concrete steps for rapprochement.
The motto of the Polish presidency “Security, Europe!” reflects the current challenges facing the continent.
The logo of the presidency – the Polish flag combined with the letters EU, represents Poland’s commitment to the EU, its two-decade-long membership in the bloc, its participation in European affairs and its ambition to set new directions for EU policy, especially when it comes to the security of the continent.
The author of the logo is Ježi Janiševski, an artist who created the symbol of Solidarity in 1980, as well as the logo of the first Polish presidency of the EU in 2011.
The Polish Presidency of the EU will be officially opened on January 3 at the Polish National Opera in Warsaw, and the traditional visit of the College of Commissioners to the country that begins the Presidency is planned for 9-10. January in Gdańsk.
Poland takes over the EU presidency from Hungary, and will hand it over to Denmark at the end of June.
