Over 45,000 users of mObywatela want a gun owner’s ID to appear in it. However, there are many indications that such a document will not be available in the application. Why?
At the beginning of the month, the mObywatel application introduced the function of submitting proposals for documents and services that users would like to see in the future. The list of applications quickly filled up, and over the last several days tens of thousands of people have submitted their proposals and votes.
The most popular document in the proposal list is Weapon owner’s ID card. According to the applicants, it would be a document confirming the right to own and carry weapons and containing information about the weapons owned. As of today (November 18), 45,415 mObywatel users have already supported this proposal, which is already a record. The second suggestion on the list is Signing documents with a trusted profile with over 27 thousand votes. Although the Ministry of Digitization indicated that the documents, services and other novelties reported in mObywatel have a great chance of being included in the application (if they gain a lot of interest), it turns out that not all promises can be fulfilled. And although the document confirming the right to own a weapon is very popular in the application, there are many indications that it will not appear in it. In the first quarter of 2024, the mObywatel application team from the Central IT Center determined that the register containing information on weapon owners falls within the competence of the Police. At the meeting on April 5 this year. A representative of the Police talked about the possibility of implementing a firearms permit in the mObywatel application. The Police representative then pointed out that there was no legal basis for transferring information from the register to the mObywatel application and there were no legislative plans in this regard..
However, this does not mean that the document will not appear in the application in the future. Although at the moment there is no statutory work planned to allow for the provision of this type of information by the Police, this may be changed in the future.
