Police activate all speed cameras. On which roads will they be located?

The Road Police activates all the radars in the equipment, as part of the “Roadpol-Speed” action, carried out at European level. Here are the roads on which the radars will be placed and how long the action will last.

The Traffic Police has started an extensive action to monitor the roads throughout the country.

The aim is in particular to detect and penalize drivers who break the speed limit, but not only.

Police activate all speed cameras

During this period, the authorities from all over the country participate in extensive actions to detect drivers who exceed the legal speed.

Between August 5 and 11, 2024, according to the 2024 European Operations Program of the European Road Police Organization (ROADPOL), the Speed action will be carried out, aimed at verifying compliance with the legal speed regime and preventing road accidents caused by excessive speed. The traffic policemen will act with priority to detect those who exceed the legal speed, using all the road traffic surveillance equipment and measuring the speed of vehicles provided by the Romanian Police“, it is stated in a press release from the Romanian Police.

Therefore, the police will activate all the radars in the equipment during this period.

On which roads will the radars be placed

In Romania, for now, there are no fixed speed cameras. Instead, the Traffic Police has hundreds of radar guns and speed measuring devices placed on emergency vehicles.

The distance from which these radars record speed is over 1.2 kilometers. And they can simultaneously determine the travel speed of all vehicles in range.

Police crews will mainly patrol national, European roads and motorways. But, as part of the action, county, communal and local roads will also be targeted. Thus, radars will also be deployed in cities, on the main streets and boulevards.

Therefore, the radars will be placed on most roads in Romania, both outside and inside the towns.

What is the speed limit on Romanian roads?

Exceeding the speed limit is punishable by a fine and, in certain cases, suspension of the driver’s license. Penalties between 2 and 20 fine points are applied for speeding.

That is why it is important for drivers to know what the speed limits are on Romanian roads.

The speed limits allowed in Romania are:

  • 130 km/h on the highway;
  • 120 km/h on express roads;
  • 100 km/h on European roads;
  • 90 km/h on the other categories of roads (national or county);
  • 50 km/h in the locality.

In areas of dangerous bends, intersections, schools, hospitals or pedestrian crossings, the road administrator may limit the maximum speed to a level considered safe. But not below 30 km/h.

How much is the fine for exceeding the legal speed limit?

The penalty for exceeding the legal speed is between 2 and 20 fine points. In addition, in certain cases the driver’s license may be withheld for 3 to 4 months.

Penalties applied depending on the speed with which you exceeded the limit:

  • 10 – 20 km/h: 2-3 fine points;
  • 21 – 30 km/h: 4-5 fine points;
  • 31 – 40 km/h: 6-8 fine points;
  • 41 – 50 km/h: 9-20 fine points;
  • over 50 km/h: 9 – 20 fine points + driving license suspension for 90 days;
  • over 70 km/h: 9 – 20 fine points + driving license suspension for 120 days.

The fine point is set, starting January 1, 2024, at 165 lei.

It should be noted, however, that the police will not penalize drivers who exceed the legal speed limit by less than 10 km/h. Thus, drivers who will be recorded by the radar, for example, with 59 km/h in the area where the limit is 50 km/h, will not be fined.
