The Special Investigation Team of the National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency (headed by Woo Jong-soo, head of the National Investigation Headquarters), which is investigating the December 3 illegal emergency martial law incident, refuted the suspicion that dozens of ‘arrest team’ police officers were dispatched to the National Assembly on the day of martial law.
Jeon Chang-hoon, head of the investigative planning department at Kooksubbon, explained in an unofficial emergency briefing on the afternoon of the 26th that it was not true that detectives from Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul were dispatched as a ‘congressman arrest team’.
Manager Jeon said, “At around 12:13 on the night of the 4th, the head of the security department at Yeongdeungpo Station said over the radio, ‘It looks like the National Assembly fence will collapse. “It is urgent,” he said. “We made our own judgment and ordered them to go support the 8th Mobile Group,” he explained. “So a total of 60 detectives moved to the hydrogen charging station.” It is said that these 60 people were mistaken for the ‘congressman arrest team’.
According to the police, among the 60 or so detectives belonging to Yeongdeungpo Station at the time, there were 10 members of the ‘information team’ whose names the police handed over at the counterintelligence request.
Manager Jeon said, “At around 11:52 p.m., the counterintelligence agent said, ‘We are planning to dispatch to Yeouido to make the arrest, but the situation on the scene is confusing and guide personnel are needed. “Please provide five police officers on site,’” he said. He added, “At 12:13 p.m., Lee Hyeon-il, head of the investigation planning division, handed over the list of five people, and later a request for five additional people came in, so the list was sent at 12:36.”
The explanation is that at the time when Gooksubon handed over the information team list to the counterintelligence agency, detectives from Yeongdeungpo Station had already heard the radio message and had moved to the vicinity of the hydrogen filling station on their own.
However, when asked by reporters whether handing over the criminal list in response to the counterintelligence agency’s request to provide the manpower necessary for the arrest may have been involved in the arrest, a police official responded, “That is something that will have to be a legal dispute later.” The police said that they never asked the counterintelligence agency, ‘Who are you arresting?’
It was confirmed that the detectives whose names were on the list handed over to the counterintelligence agency had been questioned as witnesses by the prosecution. The police claimed that they were completely unaware of the ‘politician’s arrest’ situation and stated that they were not even carrying handcuffs or other equipment.
