Ponta Delgada with 1.93 million to refurbish sports fields

The Ponta Delgada City Council will invest around 1.93 million euros in the requalification of the sports fields of São Roque, Arrifes, Santo António and Jácome Correia, the Azorean local authority revealed today.

In a statement, the municipality said that the works currently underway at the São Roque football pitch, which represent an investment of one million euros, will be completed “in time for the start of the next season”.

“This is not just another investment in the municipality’s sports infrastructure. It is a commitment to promoting healthy lifestyle habits and a strong incentive for the integration and social development of hundreds of young people in the parish of São Roque”, said the Mayor, Pedro Nascimento Cabral (PSD), quoted in the press release.

The renovation includes replacing the synthetic turf and interventions in terms of lighting, water supply network, substitute benches, fencing and drainage and irrigation systems.

Ponta Delgada City Council is also “moving forward with the project to replace the synthetic turf at the Santo António Playing Field”, which will cost around 750 thousand euros.

The Azorean municipality also said that it invested around 180 thousand euros to “modernize the infrastructure and lighting system” of the municipal field Jácome Correia, located in the parish of São Pedro, and the Águia dos Arrifes Playing Field.

For the mayor of Ponta Delgada, the investments make it possible to respond to the “aspirations and dreams of young people” of “making it in the world of sport and in official competitions”.

In June, the Council allocated 250 thousand euros to 96 sports entities in the municipality of Ponta Delgada under the Municipal Regulation for Supporting Sports and Physical and Recreational Activity.
