A 1:8 scale replica of the Porsche 550 RS Spyder from 1955 by James Deanwhich is preparing to have the famous actor’s representation on board, is offered to the temptation of potential buyers by the specialists of Amalgam Collection.
The English atelier, known worldwide for the finesse of its works, has already opened bookings. It won’t be long before the requests cover the 30 copies of the limited edition, for the construction quality of the product and the historical importance of what it illustrates. Each example of the species, offered at 28,090 euros, is hand-built and assembled by a small team of craftsmen, who know their craft inside out.
The Porsche 550 RS Spyder reproduced in reduced size is the one with chassis 550-0055. Note how “Little Bastard“, was briefly owned by the aforementioned James Dean, Hollywood star and amateur pilot. In the 45 centimeters of length of the scale replica we are dealing with, the finesse of construction emerges in every detail of the composition.
The excellence of the result was made possible by the scanning of a real car of the same species, by the technical advice of Porsche historians and by the use of the highest quality materials. Over 4,000 hours were required to develop the model, while giving shape to each single example of the species takes more than 400 hours.
It seems that James Dean fell in love with the Porsche 550 RS Spyder after seeing it John Porter racing in Santa Barbara, in May 1955, at the wheel of one of these discoveries with sinuous lines. After the purchase, he decided to treat himself to a racing weekend in Salinas (California), but he never reached his destination. While driving on Route 466, with mechanic and friend Rolf Wutherich next to him, he fatally collided with a 1950 Ford Tudor Custom. The American actor had owned the car for only 9 days.
