Porsche 928 “Surfari”: Polish enthusiasts’ dream come true

The history of the Porsche 928 Surfer began many years ago, through a bond between father and son. Hard work helped create a community around their campsite and water sports business on the Hel Peninsula on Poland’s Baltic coast, but it also provided the opportunity to indulge a passion for cars. After all, when your dad introduces you to the world of Porsche, there’s nothing else to do but embrace it.

That is how Tadeusz Elwart, manager of the campsite Chałupy 6 and creator of the Hel Riders festival, has been immersed in Porsche vibes since he was a child. Growing up with this passion and living near the sea, these ideas became intertwined. And if you already have the Porsche of your dreams in the garage, then maybe you start looking for even bigger ideas: that’s how, during the dynamic growth of the Hel Riders festival, the idea of a 928 Surfari was born.

Genesis of the Porsche 928 Surfari

What might seem like an insurmountable challenge to many was a positive boost for the Hel Riders team, who were tasked with creating this one-of-a-kind “surf car.” The task? To create a Porsche that could handle off-road terrain, but was also a perfect beach-crawler and surf taxis to transport its occupants to the beach as soon as big waves were sighted.

But how do you achieve this? The 928 offers a great starting point: the classic V8 engine. Anyone who has heard of this engine knows how special it is and that power would not be a problem. But other challenges soon arose: how to adjust the gearbox, differential and suspension to Transform a 928 into a beach buggyfor example. This is where Tomasz Staniszewski, a brilliant engineer and rally driver who had just finished the Dakar Classic Rally in his home-built Porsche 924, came into play. Staniszewski knew the project would be very challenging, but he found solutions to achieve his goal: to create a 928 with surfing in its soul. The Surfari was built with local talent, so it style is the work of Lange & Lange. These two twin brothers have been part of the Chałupy 6 scene for decades and are responsible for the car’s look.

A dream come true

After its debut at the Hel Riders festival, it was time for a road trip for the Surfari, and the car gathered a convoy and headed to Sylt, Germany for the festival. Petro-Surf by Porsche air-cooled and then to the island of Rømø in Denmark. These proved to be the perfect places to really test the 928, allowing it to come into contact with its natural environment, with the entire Hel Riders team watching the 928 Surfari hurtle along the beach. Now, as the story continues, we can only wait for the next wave.
