Porsche Macan Electric review – how to silence EV haters

With over 800,000 sales, the first generation Porsche Macan is a huge success. This is partly due to its great driving characteristics. Does its successor, the fully electric Porsche Macan, drive just as well?

We drive the Porsche Macan 4 Electric with 408 hp. That is the second engine version, the entry-level (with rear-wheel drive) delivers 360 hp. If you look purely at the power, you immediately embrace the electric Macan and give its petrol predecessor a soft but sincere kick in the ass.

The Porsche Macan we drove is almost as powerful as the waving top model on petrol, the 440 hp strong GTS. And it is about half as cheap! Long live the bpm exemption while it lasts.

Small side note is that the Porsche Macan 4 only shows all its power in ‘overboost’ with an activated Launch Control. But without this power trick the power is still 387 hp.

The acceleration of the 2.3-ton electric Porsche Macan is not quite powerful enough to drive the snot out of 911 drivers’ eyes, but it is not far off. The Macan 4 accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds with Launch Control; the simplest Penalty with almost the same power is a second faster, but also weighs 825 kilos less.

The torque is also so high (650 Nm). If you are like the participants of the television program Buy without looking If you were sitting blindfolded in the car, you’d feel more like you were driving away in a thoroughbred sports car than in a leaden SUV, so overwhelming and without any hesitation is the enormous explosion of power from the Macan 4.

“The Porsche Macan feels more playful than a 1960s British roadster.”

As you then string together one bend after another, the amazement mounts, because the four-wheel drive is so on the ball that the Porsche is surprisingly agile and feels more playful than a British roadster from the 1960s. But the electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management also works five times faster than a conventional 4×4 system and reacts to wheel slip within 10 milliseconds.

Of a completely different calibre, but just as impressive, is the sensationally good ride comfort, even though the Porsche Macan in our case is equipped with the optional 22-inch tyres (standard is 20 inches). The also optional adaptive air suspension with a total of five ride height settings (2802 euros) ensures that the body movements are limited as much as possible.

800-volt architecture

The Macan also flexes its muscles at the fast-charging station. Thanks to the 800-volt architecture, the 95 kWh battery can be recharged to 80 percent with 270 kW in just 21 minutes. At a 400-volt charging station, the Macan does something clever; it divides its battery pack into two parts, each of which can be supplied with 135 kW of power, without using an additional voltage booster.

Also impressive is the range of 613 kilometers (WLTP) that Porsche gives. The consumption that we managed to realize during our rather quick first acquaintance, was 20.3 kWh/100 km. Not economical, but considering the size and the power still very neat.

Porsche Macan test conclusion

With a starting price of 85,300 euros, the Porsche Macan is cheaper than ever. But that doesn’t make it a bargain of the month. However, the electric Macan convinces with its generous range, acceptable consumption and great performance. In addition, the driving qualities are absolutely top class. And that may well cost a bit.
