Porsche will intervene on more than 27,000 electric vehicles due to the risk of short circuits

Porsche is recalling thousands of its Taycan electric vehicles due to a possible risk of a short circuit that could cause a fire. The recall affects the batteries of 27,527 Taycans.

Problem with a battery module produced by LG Chem

The German company has to intervene in more than 27 thousand of its Taycan electric vehicles. According to the safety recall report According to NHTSA, thousands of electric vehicles are at risk of short circuits, which could start a fire.

This "call" for intervention affects Taycans built between October 21, 2019 and February 1, 2024.

The problem was narrowed down to a cell block module in the batteries produced by LG Chem and used in the Taycan. However, Porsche does not know which cars have the problem and says it cannot obtain the analysis to verify it:

This recall (ARB6/ARB7) applies to a population of vehicles for which Porsche does not currently have positive knowledge of the existence of data anomalies in the high-voltage battery modules... Even if Porsche does not currently have positive knowledge of the existence of data anomalies, Porsche cannot exclude that these high-voltage battery modules may exhibit data anomalies in the future.

Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron with battery problems

To determine if the problem is present, Porsche is advising owners to go to a dealer to install diagnostic software so they can monitor the battery. The update will be a “final solution” to this recall, but will only happen in the first quarter of 2025. Porsche is also advising customers to only charge to 80% capacity until the battery is replaced (if necessary).

Meanwhile, Audi is recalling 6,499 E-tron GT and RS vehicles for the same reason, as these electric vehicles share the same platform as the Taycan. One of LG Chem's most prominent electric vehicle recalls due to potential fires was the Chevy Bolt, which GM remedied by adjusting the batteries.

Although the Porsche Taycan has gained a loyal following in the US, it is not among the best-selling electric cars in the country.
