It is probably thanks to great luck that no tragedy happened on October 2, when part of the roof of the gym on Vrbanska cesta in Maribor collapsed. At that time, there were no children in it.
The hall is occupied practically all the time, but then a lucky coincidence spared something that we don’t even dare to think about. The criminal investigation is still ongoing, and the criminal investigators have included experts and experts from individual fields, as they want to get a clear answer as to why the unpleasant event happened. “Criminalists tackled the matter from the very beginning, from the construction onwards. The whole thing will take quite some time, but in the meantime the building is still sealed. The roof is open, so 1,200 square meters of parquet have already been destroyed,” the director of the Institute, Anton Martin Slomšek, told STA Andrej Flogie.

Relived the experience of floods
At the school, they are now primarily engaged in psychological counseling for children and employees. “There are quite a few such children and others who have recently had experiences from floods, which is why there are cases of post-traumatic shock. We have taken care of relieving conversations with our counselors and also external experts. This is very important for us.” Flogie said. The management of the school is trying to provide suitable premises for the implementation of physical education, with the help of schools from the surrounding area and the Municipality of Maribor.
Now they are trying to protect the rest of the equipment and cover the building at least enough to prevent the damage from getting worse. Although there is no estimate of the damage yet, it will certainly be in the millions. According to the director, the facility was insured to a high value, but these procedures are slow and insurance companies like to look for reasons to make the compensation as low as possible.

They didn’t want a flat roof
At the same time, Flogie asserted that he would not agree to repair the roof alone and would not send children to such premises. Even if the entire profession will claim that the current flat roof is safe, in his words, the school no longer has confidence in such a solution, so they want a new design of the entire roof. They did not want such a solution in the school even during the construction, he said.
The construction of the sports hall was financed years ago by the Maribor Archdiocese, and the institute also generated significant income with it, which will not be there now. Various events were held in the hall, including proms and New Year’s parties, sports training took place in it, so it was occupied daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
