PowerPoint Gets SRT File Support for Subtitles

Microsoft now offers the ability to import SRT files, a popular file format for video subtitles, for its presentation tool PowerPoint, which will allow users to add subtitles to presentations. provides.

In addition to adding SRT support, Microsoft has implemented a clever way to ensure that your presentations and accessibility aspects are compatible with previous versions of PowerPoint. The app automatically converts subtitles to WebVTT format for wider compatibility with older versions and popular web browsers.

How to Add SRT File/Subtitles to PowerPoint Presentation?

You can add SRT files for subtitles to your PowerPoint presentations by following these steps:

  • Select the embedded video in the presentation you want to add captions to.
  • Select Playback > Add Subtitles (or Video > Edit Subtitles > Add subtitles from file in PowerPoint for the web), and then select the SRT format subtitle file you want to add. Note: You can add multiple subtitle files for the same video.
  • When you play the video, click on the subtitles button near the bottom right corner of the video to select the subtitle track, then the words will appear as the video plays.

Microsoft also shared some tips and tricks to help you get started with the feature:

  • To create and edit an SRT file, use one of the many applications and services that support SRT, such as Clipchamp.
  • If the application or service for which you are creating an SRT file allows you to choose an encoding, use UTF-8 for compatibility with PowerPoint and many other applications and services.
  • When presenting a subtitled video in PowerPoint in a Teams meeting, use PowerPoint Live for the most immersive experience. Each participant in the meeting can turn on closed captions for videos for themselves, even if the presenter doesn’t turn on captions. No one else in the meeting knows or sees the subtitles! This even works in the Teams mobile app.
