PREMIERE. Desert in Saudi Arabia, covered with snow

In a desert in Saudi Arabia, where temperatures normally exceed 55 degrees Celsius, it snowed for the first time in history. Footage shot there shows the arid desert transformed into an unexpected wintry landscape.

Thus, the golden sand dunes were covered with silt. Most of the people living in this area had never seen snow in their lives, and the camels were completely baffled by the situation they found themselves in. Snow first fell in the Al-Jawf region on the northern edge of the Al-Nafūd desert.

A caravan of camels is seen in some footage treading carefully on the ice sheet that has formed on top of the sand, and people got out of their cars to see the snow for themselves.

Temperatures in the Al-Nafūd desert reach 55 degrees Celsius in some places, so the snowfall now is seen as an extreme phenomenon. State media reported that heavy rains and hailstorms swept across several parts of Al-Jawf region, according to antena3.ro.

The UAE National Meteorological Center attributed the unusual weather event to a low pressure system moving from the Arabian Sea to Oman.

This weather pattern brought moisture-laden air into an area known for its arid conditions, causing thunderstorms, hail and precipitation in Saudi Arabia and the neighboring United Arab Emirates.

Saudi Arabia’s Meteorological Department has issued severe weather warnings for the coming days as well. Storms, heavy rainfall, hail and strong winds will affect the entire region, and authorities have advised people to take precautions and limit their movements.
