Presented competition program Free Zone: About family, responsibility and other chances

The program of the jubilee 20th Free Zone will show 77 feature films and documentaries from 37 countries in 14 program lines, it was revealed at today’s press conference in the Belgrade Cultural Center Hall.

– We found ourselves in this hall, which is particularly important to us, because it is the only one where we have continuously shown films for 20 years. Regardless of the expansion of the festival over the years, we see this house as our home. We are also connected to this space by Nebojša Popović, former journalist and film editor of DKC, who gave the name to our festival – he said Rajko Petrovićdirector of the Free Zone and one of the selectors, who reminded that the festival is being held this year from November 6 to 11 in four cities (Belgrade, Niš, Novi Sad, Kragujevac) and in 13 cinema halls.

Branka Pavlović and Ivan Bakrač spoke about their selections, Ivan Milenković presented the talk program Kompas, and Lena Trifunović presented the accompanying program Sonar.

INTERNATIONAL SELECTION

Selector Branka Pavlović she spoke about the International Competition Program, as well as the Women’s Line and the Zone for Teenagers, which, as she pointed out, connects the issue of personal responsibility or responsibility towards oneself, and then also towards the society in which we live.

She singled out films from the International Selection “Memories of a Body on Fire” Antonele Sudasi i Tehachapi Ži-Era.

– “Memories of a Burning Body” follows three women in their years who talk about their personal and sexual liberation in a patriarchal system. Even though the film is set in Chile, even generations of women in our region will recognize it – said Branka.

The author of the documentary “Tehachapi”, photographer and graffiti artist Jean René (Zi-Er), filmed in the strict prison of the same name in California, where he had the opportunity to work with convicts on creating a work of art.

– The film asks the question that the Free Zone has been dealing with for 20 years – whether art can change the world and whether that is enough. Although it does not give a definitive answer, the film deals with the topic of prison, isolation and providing a second chance – Pavlović pointed out.

There are also films in the International selection „Tatami”, “My favorite cake”, “Diaries from Lebanon” i “Farewell, Tiberias”.

Tehachapi Trailer:

The selector singled out a documentary from the Women’s Line „Teaches of Peaches” by Philip Fussenger and Judy Landkamer about the influential singer Peaches who radically promotes her feminist ideas and who says: “If they won’t hear you, try to be seen”.

Selection for teenagers, among other things, brings i “Elbow in the stomach” Asli Ozarslan, about a girl who is a second-generation Turkish immigrant in Berlin and tries to find her place in German society, but fails.

REGIONAL SELECTION

Selector of the Regional Program – Horizons of the Balkans, Ivan Bakračpointed out that the entire selection is connected by the question of what is the family in Blakan today and what are the problems it faces.

Which “Three kilometers to the end of the world” Emanuela Parvua i “No Wind” Pavel Vesnakov, this selection also includes the titles “Forests of Forests”, “Our Children”, “Holy Sunday” and “One of those days when Heme dies”.

– One of the biggest hits of this selection is the documentary “Our Children” Silvestre Kolbas, a very intimate portrait of his family that deals with the relationship to children, spouse and profession, as well as how much right you have as an artist and author to present the life of your loved ones to everyone – said Bakrač.

“Holy Sunday” Andreja Kon raises issues of racism and family in a transitional society from the beginning of the 20th century in a Romanian village, doc “Forests of forests” Renate Poljak shows in an emotional way that a family can also be made up of people with whom you share the same ideals.

“One of those days when Heme dies” is a film by Murat Firatoglu that we should all watch, whether we are thinking about what patriarchal heritage is or how to deal with situations when we are about to be shot – explained Ivan.

SERBIAN (CO)PRODUCTIONS

Three productions by local authors will be shown at the festival, as well as one film co-produced by the Serbian minority.

“September Dawn” Ivan Đurović is his final, short feature film during his studies at Columbia University, about a young man whose prejudices about women turn an apparently romantic trip into a life-and-death struggle.

Vladimir Shojat will present a documentary, also a short film “In the silent valley” about Cveta, a Slovenian woman in Vojvodina,

Feature-length experimental film „Maga 1909” Branka Pavlović, was inspired by Maga Magazinović’s autobiography, which was danced by two groups of players from Berlin and Belgrade.

Serbia is the co-producer of the Slovenian documentary feature film “One Hundred Years” Maja Dorotheja Prelog, whose filming, from the story of her partner’s victory over a deadly disease, grew into a battlefield of unhealed wounds and the director’s painful questioning of what it actually means to be “together”.

SUPPORTING PROGRAMS

The speech segment of the Free Zone, Compasswill be held after the screening of the film “Veni vidi vici” by Daniel Hesl and Julia Nieman, produced by Ulrich Seidl.

– A film with Buñuel’s atmosphere and charm, it is a story about privileged people who kill, trample, harass and go unpunished, and the main victim, apart from the trampled and beaten, is freedom – he said Ivan Milenkoviceditor of Kompas.

This year’s theme Sonaraa side program aimed at young people and the latest trends in the film industry, is artificial intelligence (AI / AI) and its impact on moving images.

– Our idea is not to take a position, but to cover current world topics such as the strike of screenwriters and actors in Hollywood, writing scripts, fake news, deep fakevisual effects and other types of content generation through VI, which are also found in documentary films – she pointed out Lena Trifunovićone of the editors of Sonar (alongside Tamara Milošević).

Rajko Petrović also reminded of the free screening of the film “There is always tomorrow” which the festival presented to the loyal audience for its 20th birthday, and which will be shown at the closing ceremony of the festival on November 11 at 8 p.m. at the Dom omladine.

Films in the halls of DKC and Dom omladine will also have English subtitles.

The festival will be opened with a double Palme d’Or from this year’s Cannes – for a short and a feature film – “The Man Who Couldn’t Be Silent” Nebojša Slijepčević and Anora Sean Baker.
