On December 31, Estonian President Arnold Ruutel died at the age of 96. President Alar Karis expressed condolences to the family of the deceased on social media.
Arnold Ruutel was Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Estonian SSR (1983-1990), Chairman of the Supreme Council of Estonia (1990-1992). In 1991–1992 he was a member of the Constitutional Assembly, then headed the Estonian Villagers’ Party, and was chairman of the People’s Union of Estonia.
In 1995–2001 he was elected to the Riigikogu, was its vice-speaker and, finally, in 2001–2006 he served as president.
In recent years, he has been the honorary chairman of the Estonian People’s Union, and since 2012 of the Estonian Conservative People’s Party (EKRE), from which he resigned this year.
In recent days, Arnold Ruutel was in the hospital.
