The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, canceled a visit scheduled for the climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, for security reasons, the head of state’s official source revealed this Saturday.
Citing a statement from Herzog’s office, the Times of Israel newspaper reported that the visit was canceled “for security reasons” without providing further details. Still, the Israeli delegation remains attended by several Israeli officials, including the ministers of Environment, Energy and Transport, at COP29, the United Nations climate conference.
The Israeli delegation is present in Baku under strong security measures. On the one hand, due to the geographic proximity between Azerbaijan and Iran. On the other, because a pro-Palestinian protest was planned in Baku.
As in past summits, Israel once again had its own pavilion at COP29, this time with a space dedicated to hostages held by Hamas after the October 1 attack that marked a new era of conflict.
Israeli troops reach deepest point in Lebanon since October
Israeli troops have reached their deepest point into Lebanon since the October 1 invasion, capturing a strategic hill in the southern village of Chamaa, the state-run National News Agency reported.
The agency added that Israeli troops blew up the Shrine of Shimon the Prophet in Chamaa, about five kilometers from the Israeli border, as well as several houses before withdrawing, but the information could not be immediately verified.
The Israeli military said in a statement that its troops “continue limited, localized and targeted operational activity in southern Lebanon”, without commenting on the attack.
Israeli warplanes attacked the southern suburbs of Beirut, known as Dahiyeh and a stronghold of Hezbollah militias, as well as several other areas in southern Lebanon, including the port city of Tyre. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The clashes and new Israeli bombings occurred at a time when Lebanese and Hezbollah officials were studying a draft truce agreement presented by the United States.
