Călin Georgescu, an independent candidate with pro-Russian and ultra-nationalist views, surprisingly leads in the partial results of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania, with 22.1% of the vote. This places him in front of Marcel Ciolacu (PSD), who has a very close score, de 22,08%. The fight for second place is between Ciolacu and Elena Lasconi (USR), who, with 15.08% of the votes, is at a significant difference, but has theoretical chances to advance depending on the counting of the remaining votes, including from the diaspora. George Simion (AUR) is in fourth place with 14.91%.
This situation was unexpected, given that the exit polls indicated other scores. Georgescu is described as a surprise of the elections, attracting attention with a speech focused on nationalist values and criticism of Western influence.
For more details, the final dates remain to be followed, which will be essential for determining the participants in the second round of the elections.
UPDATE 06:36 The difference between Lasconi and CIolacu was reduced to 12,000 votes. The trend of reducing the difference is maintained. About 300,000 votes are still to be counted.
UPDATE 05:56 Vlad Voiculescu (USR) states, on his Facebook page, that there are still 136 sections to be counted, of which about half are abroad (USA and Canada in particular).
“In Boston the numbers sound like this:
– Lasconi: 205
– Ciolacu: 7
– Georgescu: 30
– Simion: 18″
UPDATE 05:51 The difference between Lasconi and Ciolacu was reduced to 25,000 votes, but the USR candidate still remains in third place. The trend of reducing the difference is maintained. About 320,000 votes are still to be counted.
